Do lobbies not exist? Technically, this is the situation in several European countries, including Italy. The reality is quite different. Many interest groups put pressure on legislative activities, without any regulations. On the eve of European Parliament elections, the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER-EU), a coalition of 200 groups from all over Europe, is launching a campaign for greater transparency and specific legislation to regulate the work of lobbies. The risk, they say, is a weakening of the independence of legislative choices and a consequent weakening of democracy.
