“Morti di Stato” (literally Deaths of State) is an expression that has taken hold in public opinion lately. It means death while in police custody. Among the most notorious cases is that of Stefano Cucchi, who died on 22 October 2009 at the Sandro Pertini Hospital in Rome while under arrest. A horrific set of events that still resonates today.
