This panel will look at the state of the art in how journalists build data infrastructures and collaborate around data projects. It will move beyond the stories that journalists tell with data to explore other important contributions, namely the tool and data infrastructures developed to make these stories possible. In particular it will look at how infrastructures are developed and used to facilitate collaboration and participation around the creation, collection and analysis of data. It will take a behind the scenes look at leading projects such as the data infrastructures behind ICIJ’s tax projects (Panama Papers, Offshore Leaks, Lux Leaks), ProPublica’s news apps, and The Migrants’ Files. As well as profiling emerging digital and data practices around these projects it will provide practical suggestions for future work in this area.
