Theo Padnos is an American freelance journalist who was held hostage for almost two years in Syria before being released in August 2014. He published a detailed account of his captivity in The New York Times Magazine on 29 October 2014.
He holds a degree from Middlebury College and a doctorate in Comparative Literature from the University of Massachusetts. He is the author of My Life Has Stood a Loaded Gun (2004) and Undercover Muslim: A Journey into Yemen (2011).
