Stefano Rodotà is emeritus Professor of Civil Law at the University La Sapienza of Rome. He is a member of the scientific committee of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, of which he is a past president, and is one of the authors of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. He served as the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali from 1997 to 2005, and was president of the group of European guarantors of personal privacy from 1998 to 2002. He has taught in many universities outside Italy including the Ecole de Droit at the Sorbonne in Paris, All Souls College at Oxford University and the Stanford Law School. He won the 2009 International Privacy Champion Award from the Electronic Privacy Information Center. His most recent books are Perché laico (2009), Che cos'è il corpo?
