Stefano Pontecorvo was NATO's senior civilian representative for Afghanistan. Previously, he was the Italian ambassador to Pakistan and diplomatic advisor to the Italian defense minister. He also served as Deputy Head of Mission in the Italian Embassy in London, as Deputy Director General for Sub-Saharan Africa in the Italian MFA, and as Deputy Head of Mission in the Italian Embassy in Moscow. Ambassador Pontecorvo was appointed Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
