Pietro Bartolo
doctor and author
Pietro Bartolo has worked as a doctor since 1991 at the health center on the Italian island of Lampedusa located between Sicily and North Africa. In 2016 he was among the main characters of the Fuocoammare documentary by Gianfranco Rosi. He has received a number of awards for his work with immigrants, including the 2014 Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the Premio Sergio Vieira de Mello (2015) and the International Padre Pino Puglisi Prize (2016). He has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. He is the author of Lacrime di sale (with Lidia Tilotta, 2016) and Le stelle di Lampedusa.
