Mohamedou Ould Slahi is a writer and an electrical engineer. He graduated from Gerhard-Mercator University in Duisburg, Germany with a degree in Microelectronics/Telecommunications. In 2001, he was living and working in his home country of Mauritania when he was wrongfully detained, beginning an ordeal that he would chronicle in his book Guantánamo Diary (2015). The book, which he wrote in his isolation cell in the Guantánamo Bay Naval Base (GITMO) in Cuba, is the first ever written by a GITMO detainee and has been published in twenty-two languages. After fifteen years of detention, Ould Slahi was released on 17 October 2016 to Mauritania. Ould Slahi is still feeling his way back into society and plans to do as much as he can for humanity. He lives in the city of Nouakchott.
