Karim Franceschi

activist and author

Karim Franceschi was born in Casablanca to an Italian father and a Moroccan mother. He grew up in Senigallia, Italy, where he was an activist in the Spazio Autogestito Arvultura. In 2014 he went to Kobane, in Syria, for the humanitarian project Rojava Calling. In 2015 he returned there to join the militia of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State. He wrote about his experiences in the YPG in his book Il combattente. Storia dell'italiano che ha difeso Kobane dall'ISIS (Rizzoli, 2015).
