Galina Timchenko

Galina Timchenko is a Russian journalist and the executive editor of Meduza.

From 1997 to 1999, she worked as an editor at the Kommersant newspaper. In 1999 she joined the newly-created online news website, becoming editor-in-chief in 2004. In 2010, Harvard University conducted a study of the Russian blogosphere, identifying as the most widely quoted news source among Russian-language websites.

In March 2014 Galina Timchenko was fired. The employees of issued a statement that the reason for the move was to appoint a new editor-in-chief controlled directly by the Kremlin and turn the website into a propaganda tool. In October 2014, Timchenko, together with several former journalists of, set up the media organisation Meduza, based in Riga (capital of neighbouring Latvia).
