Around the world, in every sector and on every continent, the challenges faced daily by women and girls are making headlines. Millions are making their voices heard through social media campaigns and joining marches and protest movements to raise awareness of women’s rights.
But what about the voices of poor women who live in remote rural areas of developing countries, where internet connectivity is erratic and expensive, and mobile phones are a luxury?
These women are small farmers, and they are among the poorest and most marginalized workers in the world, accounting for 43 per cent of the world’s agricultural workers. They labour to produce food for their families and communities. But they are rarely able to speak up about their experiences or to contribute to the decisions that affect their lives.
